I just added my husband's name to my Geico car insurance. They said they
need his Canadian driver's license issuance date and address etc...well,
when he received his Virginia drivers license, he had to surrender his
Canadian license to the DMV!!!! They said we will continue to receive a
surcharge of $115  to each 6-month balance until we can get that
information. ????? They need this to do a driver or motor vehicle check.
Did this happen to anyone else? I don't even know how we'd get that
information, or if we can just call the Canadian DMV to get that?

Thanks,

Juliet

Call the DMV in VA. They can give you the information from the file.
Also call GEICO again and talk with a supervisor. They didn't need this
information from Jim when he went under my GEICO policy.

Hi,

I added my husband 4 months ago and they did not ask for his German
driver's license? They only asked how long he had been driving in
Germany and how long he had been licensed in California.

It was so expensive to add him. That is what I remember mostly.

Aliluv- we got a small discount for being a married couple from our car
insurance company. However, that extra $115 kind of negates that...sigh.
Maybe it depends on the insurance company?

I thought the DMV had no right to ask you to surrender your forign
driving licence? I know when I got my Ohio licence the guy looked at
my UK one and gave it me back saying he can't take it off me. I also
ahd no probs getting insurance using my UK or US license, and I'm with
State Farm.

I don't know, maybe the DMV offices in each state have a different
policy? The VA one states on their web site that the foreign license
would have to be surrendered (or something to that effect) to get the VA
license. They said the same thing when we went there and applied for his
license. I guess if we visited Canada with AP, he could use his VA
license to drive if needed, but I kind of wish we could have kept his
Canadian license.

Juliet-

Stantton had to surrender his Canadain license as well at the VA DMV.
We have Nationwide insurance, and they didn't ask me any questions when
I added him to my policy.

DMV are state offices and vary from state to state. In NYS a Canadian
must surrender his/her Cnd license if they wish to get a NYS license
without having to take the written and driving test. I don't know if
there are any states in the US that will exchange a UK license for a US
license without at least mandating that the holder of a UK license have
to take the written test.

FWIW, in Canada a holder of a US license must surrender their US license
if they are getting a Canadian license. This is spoken of frequently on
the other immigration forums as many GC holders in the US who are
activitating their landed status in Canada do not want to give up their
US driver's license as they use it as proof of still maintaining status
in the US.

Jcapulet,

You are lucky you got a discount my ins went up 1100 however we did add
another vehicle.

We went from paying 800 to 1940. I am in Orange county California so
that is why it's high.

I also have Geico!

I hope you resolve this.

My husband just got his driver's license last Saturday and I finally got
around to calling on the insurance today. $35 a month increase to add
him to the policy because he is considered an "inexperienced" as he
hasn't had a license in 9 years. I didn't think that was too bad
considering.

All they asked for to add him to the policy was his DOB and his new
license number. We have his old expired one still from when he lived in
VA, the DOL in WA State just punches expired licenses but you still gett
keep them.

We use Progressive and they charge a 5% surcharge for each driver
without a "verifiable driving record" which means you have not held a US
or Canadian license for a year OR you cannot provide evidence.

In a way, I wish they HAD asked for my Australian license but that did
not count towards reducing our premium.

Only now, after 2 years, is the fee coming down.

Gugh..!

When I added my (Ontarian) wife to my USAA policy, they wanted her
driver's license -- luckily she hadn't transferred her license to Texas
yet. Presumably they wanted to run her license for tickets and wrecks.

You should be able to find your hubby's d/l information on some
paperwork lying around, or, failing that, by contacting the relevant
provincial DMV.

In the end, adding her saved me about $0.50/6-months. Heh.

When I was added to my husbands insurance, they did ask me for proof of
my driving record. I called my former insurance up in Canada and had
them send me a copy of my record. I made sure that they knew not to
include any accidents from my x-husbands record, since we had joint
insurance at that company and it had not been 5 years since my divorce.
So I asked them for a letter stating that my record was clean.

This way I was not charged any extra to be added to my husbands
insurance.

Best of luck

insurance at least in QC shows whether you have any points lost,
outstanding tickets, etc. that people here in the states have on their
drivers license. Canadian drivers licenses in themselves do not hold
that information for more than 2 years (as for points go)

Hi all,

I live in Maryland and have State Farm insurance (for about 12 years)
Hubby arrived about a year ago and after the wedding I added
him to my policy. Since we only had 1 car - no additional money was
added to my premium. (Hubby is 56 years old)

Yesterday I bought a new car so hubby could have our current car.
State Farm gave him a discount for being over 50 and we also got
the multicar discount. They have never asked him for any type of
documentation from Norway. Maybe because of his age?

Aliluv,

The discount wasn't that high, only $13 something off the 6 month
balance, twice a year (woohoo we're rich! LOL). I think for that $115
(which should be gone soon I hope) we should at least get a
complimentary Gecko.

Thanks Quyrah_RV, we'll call to see if we can get a letter. Either that
or we'll change insurance companies. :)
